First, is it just your house?

Look out the window before you do anything else. If the street lights and the neighbours are dark as well, the fault is almost certainly on the network, and that belongs to Vector, the lines company that owns and runs Auckland's supply. Vector's power outage page lets you check your address for a current outage and report one if it is not listed. Storms, tree branches on overhead lines and cars hitting poles are among the usual causes. If someone in the house relies on medical equipment that needs power, Vector recommends registering that with your electricity retailer before you ever need it.

If only part of the house is out, the fault is in your own wiring, and that is where we come in; if the whole house is off but the neighbours are not, it may be your wiring, your service line or the fuse at the point of supply, which is usually Vector's. The service line from the street to the meter usually belongs to the property owner too, so a damaged line after a storm is also yours to have repaired. For a fault inside the house, from the switchboard to the last light switch, call us any time on 021 156 4005. Once the immediate danger is dealt with, the cause is often worth a proper look: a fault that trips again next week is cheaper to find now, and the same goes for an old board, where a switchboard replacement may be the lasting fix.

Call straight away if

Something smells hot

A burning smell from a socket, a light fitting or the switchboard, or brown scorch marks on a plug. Turn off the main switch if you can do it safely, and call.

It trips the moment you reset it

A breaker or RCD that will not stay on, or a fuse that blows again straight away, is pointing at a fault that needs finding, not another reset.

Water near the electrics

A leak through a light fitting, or water around a switchboard or outdoor socket. Keep clear of it and switch off at the main if it is safe to reach.

Half the house is out

Some rooms or circuits dead while the rest works, especially after a storm, a renovation or new work nearby.

Fault finding for the faults that come back

Not every fault is an emergency. Some show up as an RCD that trips once a fortnight, lights that dim when the oven goes on, or a socket that works some days and not others. For homes and for the shops and cafes along Mt Eden Road and Dominion Road, this is how we track them down.

  1. Hear the pattern

When it happens, what was running, the weather at the time. A trip that only follows rain often points outdoors.

  2. Split the circuit

Appliances unplugged and sections isolated one at a time until the fault follows one part.

  3. Test the wiring

Insulation and earth tests on the suspect cable, fittings opened up and checked for heat damage or moisture.

  4. Repair and prove it

The fault fixed, the circuit tested again, and the work certified where the law requires it.

Emergency and fault questions

Do you come out at night and at weekends?

Yes. Our electricians are available for call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for homes and businesses in Mount Eden and the suburbs around it.

What can I safely do while I wait?

Turn off the main switch at the switchboard if you can reach it without touching anything wet or damaged, unplug appliances on the affected circuit, and keep people away from anything scorched or sparking. Do not open up fittings yourself.

Can I just put heavier fuse wire in?

No. WorkSafe warns that fuse wire heavier than the circuit is rated for, or anything else in its place, can cause a fire. A fuse that keeps blowing is protecting a circuit with a problem.

The power came back after an outage but part of the house is still off. Why?

A surge or a fault at the moment the supply came back can trip a breaker or damage an appliance. Try resetting the tripped breaker once. If it will not hold, call us.

Do you handle emergencies for shops and cafes?

Yes, commercial premises as well as homes. For planned work on a business, see our page on commercial electrical work in Mount Eden.
