Commercial electrician in Mount Eden

A commercial electrician in Mount Eden spends a lot of time in old buildings doing new jobs: a cafe kitchen in a 1910s shop, an office fit-out above a Dominion Road storefront, new lighting for a tenancy that has changed hands. Our registered electricians work on shops, hospitality and offices, and take call-outs 24 hours a day when something fails.

Shopping streets built in layers

Mount Eden's two shopping strips grew a building at a time. Mount Eden Village began with Alfred Cucksey's store at the corner of Stokes Road in 1873 and spread along Mt Eden Road once the trams arrived. According to the council's Maungawhau heritage walks, many of the shops between Essex Road and Ngauruhoe Street were built between 1910 and 1920 on the front yards of villas, and the villas are still there behind them. Down the hill, the Eden Valley shops on Dominion Road mix late Victorian and Edwardian buildings, many of them two storeys with living space upstairs, with a century of later additions.

For an electrician that history shows up behind the walls. One building may hold a shop, a kitchen and a flat, each extended at a different time, with sub-boards and circuits that nobody has mapped. Before we add a commercial oven or a new lighting track, we trace what feeds what, so a new load does not land on a circuit that is already near its limit.

Work for Mount Eden businesses

Boards and sub-boards

Distribution boards upgraded or extended as a business adds equipment, with RCD protection where it is needed and the inspection arranged when the work requires one.

Kitchen and equipment circuits

Dedicated circuits for ovens, ranges, dishwashers, chillers and coffee machines, sized for the load.

Faults and call-outs

Electricians available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, because a fault at closing time cannot always wait. See our emergency electrician page for what to do in the meantime.

Lighting

Shop, cafe and office lighting with LED fittings, from track lights on a display to downlights in a dining room. More on the options is on our LED lighting page.

Data and screens

Data cabling for point-of-sale, Wi-Fi access points and screens, and TVs wall-mounted with the cables out of sight.

Fit-outs and tenancy changes

Power, lighting and data laid out for a new tenant, with the old circuits that are no longer needed made safe or removed.

Working in older commercial buildings

Several of the older shops on both strips keep their original shopfronts and ceiling details, which are worth protecting. Cable routes are planned to avoid cutting into original features, and fittings are chosen to sit comfortably with them.

Disruptive work, such as a board changeover that takes the power off, can be planned for before opening or after close, and where there is a flat or an office upstairs, we agree the timing with everyone affected. When the work is finished it is tested, and you get the Certificate of Compliance to keep with your lease and insurance records.

Questions from Mount Eden businesses

Can you work outside our trading hours?

Yes. Our electricians are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so work that needs the power off can be planned for before you open or after you close.

Our kitchen keeps tripping the power. Can you sort it?

Yes. A trip that follows a particular appliance, or happens when everything is running at once, can usually be traced to one item or an overloaded circuit. Fault finding comes first, then the fix.

We are adding equipment. Will we need a bigger board?

Possibly. We check the board's spare capacity and space first. Upgrading the main switchboard to a higher capacity is high-risk work that must be inspected, and we arrange the licensed electrical inspector.

There is a flat above the shop. Is that a problem?

Not a problem, but it needs care. Shared buildings often have supplies and sub-boards that have been altered over the years, so we confirm what feeds each part before working on it.

Will we get paperwork for the landlord and insurer?

Yes. Completed work is tested and certified, normally with a Certificate of Compliance, which an insurer may ask to see.
